The Song Of Songs I
1 The song of songs, which is Solomon's.
2 Let him (a) kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is (b) better than wine.
(a) kiss me: as noted by Matthew Henry, a kiss of peace and reconciliation. As in the parable of the father kissing his prodigal son, or Esau kissing Jacob in the act of forgiveness. On both of these occasions the spirit overcame the law, Love overcame hate, forgiveness overcame resentment. For:
mercy triumphs over judgement (James 2:13)
The very same way, our heavenly father sends us love from his glorious mouth to reconcile our mistakes. First through his precious Word:
God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us. (Romans 5:8-11)
And then he sends us his Spirit, by outpouring the breath of life into the nostrils of the earth:
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sends me so I send you.” And when he had said this he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any they are retained. (John 20:21–23.)
These kisses from God are expressions of his love and compassion for us. So therefore:
We love him, because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)
And now, in these last days, we can return this expression of love, by kissing his darling Son:
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. (Psalm 2:12)
By bowing down and kissing his feet. By uttering breaths of praise and worship and presenting our bodies a living sacrifice, which is our reasonable service.
Thy love is better than wine: The bible constantly makes mention of wine. By the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we can now see that “new wine” is represented as The Holy Spirit. The love of God (Holy Spirit) intoxicates us with a greater strength than wine (Acts 2:15-17). And in this Context, I think Solomon is talking about old wine instead of new wine. And the old wine (at least to my understanding) is the old law. See Old & New Wine
So let’s try to give this an easier translation:
“Let God fill me with his Holy Spirit. for his Spirit guiding me (inside of my heart) is better than trying to follow a set of old commandments and rules.”
For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Corinthians 3:6)
3: Because of the savour of thy (a) good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
(a) good ointments: the oil of gladness is The Holy Spirit. And God pours forth this holy anointing upon the head of our high priest Jesus Christ and it runs down the skirts of his garments (or the body of the church), and from Israel to the rest of the nations. From the nations to the individual man, and from the man unto his family. As the holy spirit is outpoured to the world, he carries with him the testimony of Jesus Christ. Never speaking of himself, but of that glorious name by which we must be saved. His name itself is an ointment (which is a protection when called upon, or poured forth, with authority)
Virgins: us born again Christians who have been washed by the blood of Jesus our Husband and given white garments.
4: Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
Draw me: Since there is none who (naturally) seeks after God:
“Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.”
We must first be drawn to our lord and savior:
“John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. ”
We: The Church of Jesus Christ. Those who have been baptized by the holy spirit.
Run after thee: We will chase after Christ instead of the world. Our eyes will be single and no longer adulterous.
King/into his chambers: Only through King Jesus can we enter into His hidden pavilion, into our kingdom of heaven, into the refreshing, into the temple of our God
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:16”
We have been chosen since before the foundations of the earth to be The Hidden Remnant. This is a good way to know that you’ve been chosen: When you chase Jesus instead of chasing the world. When the interests and concerns of the world are not your interests and concerns. Because you’re here instead of hanging with your drinking buddies. Not because you have to, but because you want to.
The upright love thee: but the wicked hate thee, because Jesus is the truth. Because the wicked have "taken refuge in lies and have hid themselves in falshood" (Isaiah 28:15).
preferring The Veil instead of the truth
“And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. 2 Thessalonians 2:11”
5: I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
I am black, but comely: The Shulamite woman is referring to her psychological/spiritual state. Though she is beautiful, she is still in darkness.
6: Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
Mine own vineyard have I not kept: could represent putting her family’s needs above her own. It shows responsibility, self-sacrifice and loyalty. Here we can see the character of the Shulamite woman shine through her spiritual darkness. As it is written:
“The greatest among you will be your servant. (Matthew 23:11)”
7: Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
O thou whom my soul loveth: Our souls love Jesus and long for Him, because he saved our very souls from death and destruction. Our souls love Jesus, because he first loved us with a power so intense that the truth was undeniable.
Tell me, where thou feedest thy flock/Rest at noon: Our souls long to be fed by him, because we first tasted his bread and saw that it was good. Our souls long to go where he feeds us, because we’ve been everywhere else, and we know that nothing compares. not that we are required to go, but that we desire to go where the Lord feeds us, and where he gives us our rest. This is because we understand that the power that restored our very souls had to come from none other than God Himself, so we delight to willfully put away our independence. Truly, it was through our independence (biting the forbidden fruit) that we found ourselves dead to our sins in the first place. Now, those who truly ask the Lord how to become part of his flock are those who understand that being apart from his flock is evil. They have come to understand that there are two types of flocks: the flock of sheep and the flock of goats.
And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. (Matthew 25:33)
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (Matthew 25:46)
Why should I be as one that turneth aside?: turning aside from the true church of Jesus Christ. Not a church built with human hands, but one built by the holy spirit (The Foundation/The Rock):
Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (Psalm 127:1)
Not one that communes every Sunday in a specific geographic location, but one that communes for service of those in need. The true church is one that helps the widow and the fatherless and the homeless and one that visits those in prison.
Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me (Matthew 25:40)
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. (John 21:17)
As believers, we are also made shepherds, to rally more sheep to the flock, and to care for them. Not being a respecter of persons when it comes to the sheep that show up at our doorstep. A good example of this is in 1 Samuel 22:1-2, when King David shepherds 400 men who were in distress, in debt and discontented. He knew his charge and was delighted to lead them without reproach. Those who follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ should all walk, talk and act the same way (being driven by the same holy spirit)
When I urged Titus to visit you and sent our other brother with him, did Titus take advantage of you? No! For we have the same spirit and walk in each other’s steps, doing things the same way. (2 Corinthians 12:18 NLT)
8 If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds' tents.
9 I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots.
10 Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold.
11 We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver.
12 While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
13: A bundle (sachet) of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
Myrrh: Under Matthew Poole's commentary: “in the place where bundles or bags of myrrh or other perfumes hang down, being fastened about their necks between the breasts, which yet were taken away and laid aside by night. But the church intimates that she will not part with Christ, neither day nor night.” To my understand, that is The Father, The Son and Holy Spirit dwelling intimately in our hearts forever. Myrrh is also a fragrant resin used in those days to embalm and anoint bodies for burials, so there is always a close association with myrrh and our Lord Jesus.
Sachet of Myrrh: I can get a picture of Jesus being wrapped in linen swaddling clothes when he was born as he is being held close to the heart of his mother, and another picture of Jesus wrapped by Joseph in linen when he was buried being held close to the heart of the earth. Both images show his holy presence wrapped in either linen cloth or human flesh for a physical binding of the spirit, and then his body is broken, death is swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54-57), and the wine is outpoured on the earth.
Insert i will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.
Insert it is necessary that i go, for i will send my comforter
Between my breasts: The darkness period between the old and new testaments (the left and right breasts from which we draw our nourishment), waiting in great anticipation for the arrival of the bright morning star; Jesus Christ (holy spirit). There is roughly a 400 year period between the prophesies of Malachi (the end of the old testament age. Ref: The End), and the birth of Jesus, the beginning of new testament) this intertestemental period was regarded as the “silent years” or “dark years” when no new prophets were raised and God revealed nothing new to the hebrews. So all the night he lay dormant between the two breasts, between the old and new testaments, between the two thieves he died (one is carnal, the thief who denied Jesus, and one is spirit, who received him) After his resurrection, he sent us the "light". Which is The Holy Spirit. Here are some scriptures alluding to this prophesy:
Isaiah 9:1 Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair shall not go on forever... Isaiah 9:2 The people who walk in darkness shall see a great Light—a Light that will shine on all those who live in the land of the shadow of death. (Who live in spiritual darkness) | John 1:5 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (Tag: Over the Waters)
